my.att.net/s/editorial.dll?bfromind=2728&eeid=6137078&_sitecat=1522&dcatid=0&eetype=article&render=y&ac=1&ck=&ch=neThe above link is an artical about a raid here in SC at a chciken processing plant. There are lots of hispanic folks here in SC, not sure why or if there are no more here than elswhere, just seems like a lot. A friend who runs his family buisness switched to hispanic workers a couple years back, before their workers were pretty much all black. He reports his labor difficulties were over once he hired hispanics and while a worker may only work a year and then go home he says the next day there is a relative of the guy who left standing there asking to take the job. No idea if he checks to see his workers are legal. Myself I think the illegal chicken pluckers can have that work, I know I do not want to do it. On the other hand know painters who say the illegals are running them out of buisness because they cannot beat r even meet the prices they charge. Difficult issue I am not sure how I feel about it. I know I do not blame the illegals for coming here.

We need immigrants. My folks were immigrants, way back in 1927. What we need is to have a way for them to become legal workers here. At one time, I helped a couple of illegal immigrants to get a foot hold here, but that was before 9-11. I wouldn't do that now. We need to know who is here, so we don't get hit again.

Most everyone here came here from somewhere, I happen to be more native American than most folks but do not feel that gives me a lock on the place. Yeah seems we need poor folks from elsewhere to crap on to take the jobs others do not want and I do not think that is what scares folks what scraes them is when they wash the crap off and get an education and compete for the money

The first generation of an immigrant family, will always be paid less than the rest of the population, but even with the lower wages, they are living way better than they did where they came from. That is why they come. The reason they don't do as well as the rest of the American population, is because they don't speak English well. Their children, who are raised and educated here, will speak English better, so will be able to progress more. There are some folks that were born here, but refuse to learn proper English, and thus condemn themselves to lower end jobs.
As far as their childern taking jobs after they get assimilated, you don't need to worry, because there are a lot of us old folks that are retireing and dying, leaving them room. What WILL change, is the culture, because the largest miority now, is the hispanic population. They will have a big influence on the culture. European culture will become less and less important. Hispanics are becoming more and more politically powerful.

I can speak with some authority...
My grandparents on my mom's side came over, thru Ellis Island, from Greece and Turkey in 1919 or 20. He took anything. 18 hour jobs. Managed to open his own resturant in Philadelphia during the Depression and by the time he passed in 1955 owned 3 and bought enough stock and investments by then that my grandmother never worked until she passed in 1981. She put grandkids thru college (not me) and helped her three kids buy homes. Bought hers cash. Left a modest fortune. Pretty good for people who barely spoke English.... I was named after my grandfather. I'm not 10% the man he was.
My step father came over (legally) to study medicine in 1956 and did the typical immigrant thing. Worked his tail off. Retired as Chief of Pediatrics at UCLA in 1996. Ironically, his retirement banquet was on the Queen Mary in Long Beach Harbor.....
Same ship he came over on, 40 years before.
My natural father was illegal. Left my mom and I in 1955. Finally got legal in 1967. Shot himself in the head in 1975.
From my point of view, if you start out doing it right, and follow the rules, you end up doing all right. If you look for short cuts..........
Right or Wrong, that's my opinion.

They say that most of the illegals from Mexico do not want to be here and have left families back home. Would you want to be in their shoes and not come home to your family every night? Hundreds die in the deserts every year here in the summer. d**n sad if you ask me. I like the Mexican people and have always found them to be the most friendly and hard working people on earth.
The Mexican government needs to do more to attract manufacturing to Mexico and keep it's people home with decent wages and benefits. If we spent half the money we spend on Chinese manufacturing in Mexico we would not have such a huge illegal problem and the Mexican people could stay home where they want to be.
A Mexican factory worker makes seven dollars a day.
A Chinese factory worker makes seven dollars a week.
Greed Greed Greed and we say we believe in human rights "Bullshiiit" we are hypocrites.
